One question that made 6 years feel like nothing.
I’m Zaw. 360° Digital Marketer. Currently working in Dubai.
SEO, Meta and Google Ads, TikTok, Social Media, Content, CRM. Strategy to execution, driven by data, all handled by one person. Back in Southeast Asia, I built a marketing department from the ground up, scaled it to management level, and delivered ROAS 4.2x along the way. 10+ industries, dozens of accounts managed simultaneously. ABE UK, Google, and Meta certified.
I carried all of that to Dubai.
Why Dubai
Career growth. Simple as that.
For a digital marketer, Dubai is where the region’s biggest campaigns, agencies, and budgets converge. The market is bigger, the ceiling is higher, and the opportunity is real. I came here to grow with my skills, my results, and my drive.
Some people don’t get that choice. Back in Myanmar, a civil war is happening. People are leaving not because they want to, but because they have no other option. I respect every one of them.
I chose to come. And I thought that choice, backed by six years of proven work, would be enough.
When I realized it wasn’t. Not immediately.
Job Hunting
LinkedIn. Bayt. Naukrigulf. Indeed. All running at the same time.
Indeed is underrated for newcomers. It is a solid entry point that most people overlook.
60 applications a day. 4 to 8 interviews every single week.
I approached job hunting the way I approach marketing. Track the CV-to-interview rate. Identify patterns. Adjust. Scale what works. Same muscle, different problem.
One thing I learned fast: most jobs in Dubai are never posted publicly. They are filled through referrals and networks before they ever reach a portal. If you are only relying on job boards, you are already missing most of the market. But I was one of them, to be honest.
Timing matters too. Tourist high season brings a hiring surge, and more roles open up. But more job seekers arrive at the same time. The opportunity grows and so does the competition. Q1 and post-Ramadan are the peak hiring windows. Knowing when to push harder is a skill nobody teaches you.
The Market Is Different

In Southeast Asia, Facebook is king. Social-first, mobile-heavy, scrappy execution, tight budgets. That was my world for six years.
In the UAE, people search on Google before they buy. In SEA, they scroll on Facebook first. Skipping Google here means missing buyers who are already ready to act.
The visual standard is different too. Static images are not enough anymore. Video dominates. And because most companies here are SMEs, the expectation is often one person handling everything. Ads, SEO, content, video, copy, strategy.
As a 360° marketer, I found AI tools to be a genuine advantage here. Faster output, better visuals, more capacity. But remember, you are products or services for real humans. I will talk more about this in the next post.
The Countdown Nobody Prepares You For
A visit visa gives you 60 days.
That countdown runs in your head every single minute. You get interviews, but you cannot celebrate yet. You get an offer, but you still cannot relax. You only truly exhale when the Emirates ID is in your hand.
That is the universal feeling of every Dubai newcomer. And nobody really warns you about it before you land.
The Challenges
No UAE experience means your salary gets pushed down. Skills do not matter as much as local proof, and you do not have that yet.
English accent is a real barrier. Being able to communicate is one thing. Sounding fluent and confident in a multicultural room is another skill entirely.
Most companies are SMEs. Visa sponsorship processes are complex. Many employers ask for a trial period before committing to legal hiring. This is not about bad intentions. It is the reality of how the system works here.
But here is what I also saw: most newcomers who started at basic salary, stayed consistent, and proved their value made a 2 to 3 times salary jump by the time their first contract ended. The first year is not a loss. It is an investment.
The Thing Nobody Posts About
Family is a world away.
No friend circle yet. No familiar faces. You carry the mental load alone, the uncertainty, the pressure, the quiet nights in a new city.
Nobody talks about this on LinkedIn. But it is real. If you are planning to come to Dubai, prepare for this too. It is not weakness. It is part of the journey.
Takeaway
Southeast Asia taught me how to build. Dubai is teaching me who you are or how to prove.
The market changed. The rules changed. But I did not come here to survive. I came here to navigate. Understand the system, adapt to the battlefield, and keep moving.
No blame. No excuses. Just execution
Coming Next
AI is reshaping the UAE digital marketing landscape faster than most people realize. I will break it down in the next post. But there is something more important than AI that I want to talk about first.
If you are already in Dubai or planning to make the move, drop one challenge you faced or are worried about in the comments. You are not alone in this.
